Ajou's Project Support Team is selected as the 'Department of the Month'2015-11-30Ajou University’s Project Support Team was selected as the ‘Department of the Month’ and received gifts and words of encouragement from President Dong Yeon Kim on November 30th in the President's Office.Project Support Team was launched in September and consists of Team Leader Cheol Kyun Park, Assistant Manager Joo Yong Kim, and Ji Eun Park. The Team has been working hard to win the Project for Developing R&D Platforms Specialized in Medicine, Health, and IT, and Medical Equipment Technology, which is organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. In November alone, the Team's members worked over 100 hours of overtime during weekdays and weekends due to the Project and other tasks.The Project was announced on September 22nd and received project plan submissions until November 18th, and there will be presentations by the applicants on December 2nd. Preparation for the Project is being led by Professor Ye Yeon Won (Department of Orthopedics), and involves the Project Support Team and the College of Information Technology.

“Sherlock Holmes” musical is successfully staged at Ajou with local residents in attendance2015-11-26The musical "Sherlock Holmes – The Secret of the Anderson Family" was successfully staged at Ajou University on November 25th with about 3,500 people in attendance, including Ajou people and local residents.The performance was part of the Ajou Cultural Fest, which is held every year in November and has staged various types of shows, including pop and classical music concerts. The “Sherlock Holmes” musical is based on the well-known detective novel with the same title. It is considered to be a quality production and have popular appeal, winning several awards after the novel was first adapted to musical form in 2011.About 1,000 local residents from Wooman-dong, Woncheon-dong, and Gwanggyo enjoyed the musical, along with students, professors, and staff members from the University.President Eui Seop Shin of Ajou’s Student Council said, "This is the last major event I have prepared this year as the leader of the Student Council. My term is approaching its end, and I am thankful that so many people have come to fill this theater."President Dong Yeon Kim briefly introduced the novel Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and asked that the audience enjoy the performance. He said to the invited residents, "Ajou University has a nationwide reputation and strength in international exchanges, but I believe its foundation will be weak if Ajou fails to take root in the community and be loved by the residents, no matter how hard we work. Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim gives a special lecture to Suwon City officials participating in the Key Leaders Education Program2015-11-26Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim gave a special lecture to 30 Suwon City officials (Grade 6) who are participating in the Key Leaders Education Program. The Suwon Municipal Government commissioned the University to operate the Program.President Kim's lecture began at 10:30 a.m. on November 26th and was based on his experiences and anecdotes as a senior public official.He talked about his experiences leading deregulation as the Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination, saying "32 percent of all regulations can be eliminated without changing laws and regulations. The reason why it is hard to get rid of them may be because of public officials’ stereotype mindset and ways of working." He added, "You should continue to attempt to break such a stereotype rather than sticking to previous successes and ways of working."President Kim cited 'humility' as the most important quality of a public official, saying that public officials should listen to what others say and put themselves in others' shoes.He went on to say, "Jim Collins, a business consultant, said personal humility contributes to building greatness," emphasizing, "The enthusiasm of right-minded civil servants is critical in establishing a sustainable economic and social structure."After the lecture, President Kim had a luncheon with the Suwon City officials. He said, "Ajou is trying to develop in harmony with the local community including Suwon City, and I will give lectures whenever there is a request." Dean Heung Sik Kim and Professor Hyuk Sung Kwon of the Graduate School of Public Administration also joined the luncheon.Thirty officials (Grade 6) from the Suwon Municipal Government are attending the Key Leaders Education Program, which lasts for ten months. The Program includes 19 subjects including “The Changing Administrative Environment and Local Government Administration for the Future,” “Proper Views of Public Positions,” “Laws and Regulations Relevant to Municipal Officials,” and “Education on Informatization.”

Ajou's Department of Cyber Security dedicates a state-of-the-art laboratory 2015-11-25Ajou University's Department of Cyber Security under the College of Information Technology held an opening ceremony for the Cyber Security Multiplex Center. The University expanded the Department of Software Security into the Department of Cyber Security after it was selected by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning as a 'University Specialized in Information Protection’ in June. The opening ceremony, which was held in Paldal Hall on the afternoon of November 24th, was attended by Vice Minister Jae You Choi of the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning, President Kee Seung Baik of the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and President Chun Shik Park of the Korea Institute of Information Security and Cryptology, and officials from related institutions. CEO Dae Yeon Kim of WINS, CEO Yeong Su Han of MarkAny, CEO Ki Yoong Hong of SECUVE, and CEO Chan Am Park of Stealien also joined them.From the University, President Dong Yeon Kim, Executive Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Kyung Hee Choi, Dean Jung Yol Jo of the College of Information Technology, and other senior officials participated in the event.The Cyber Security Multiplex Center is a laboratory for the Department of Cyber Security and has state-of-the-art information protection equipment. The Center has security and control systems in which they can conduct exercises for dealing with cyber threats and crisis management, and it allows for carrying out protection against hacking and virtual hacking drills, and analysis of infringed information, etc.The 'Information Protection Specialty Universities’ Project is run by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning and the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and it aims to foster talents in the field of information protection. Ajou University, Korea University, and Seoul Women’s University are participating in the Project.President Kim said in his welcome message, "As cyber security is becoming more and more important, people with expertise in the field are in great demand," adding, "Ajou will make every effort to foster talents with hands-on experience in the area."In his congratulatory speech, Second Vice Minister Jae Yoo Choi from the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning said, "Cyber threats have become so intelligent and sophisticated that they are posing a threat to national security," adding, "I expect Ajou University to play a central role in training excellent talents in security."

Ajou's Woncheon Information Center is dedicated and a signboard-hanging ceremony is held for the Haedong Academic Information Chamber2015-11-19On the morning of November 19th, the completion ceremony for the Woncheon Information Center was held at Ajou University.The ceremony was attended by Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim, Chairman Jeong Shik Kim of the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation, and officials from the University.The Woncheon Information Center is located behind Woncheon Hall at the previous site of Ajou's club rooms. The three-story building has a total floor space of about 901 square meters, a restaurant will be placed on the ground floor, and the information chamber and seminar rooms will be installed on the second and third floor, respectively. The information chamber was built with the 500 million won that was donated last year by the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation to build a library dedicated for natural sciences and engineering majors. The space was named the "Haedong Academic Information Chamber" in honor of the donor, and a signboard-hanging ceremony was held after the building was dedicated.At the opening ceremony, President Kim said, "I expect that the Woncheon Information Center will be a place where students enjoy both studying and cultural activities. I would like to thank Chairman Jeong Shik Kim for his precious contribution to this building."Chairman Kim stated, "I have been running the Haedong Science and Culture Foundation in order to contribute to the development of science and engineering fields in this country. A memorial space is open in Ajou's Dasan Hall until Nov. 18th for victims of the terror in France2015-11-17On November 17th, a memorial space was arranged in the western entrance of Ajou University's Dasan Hall in honor of the victims of the terror in France.Three-color candles representing the French national flag and condolence flowers are placed in the space, and the monitor attached to the wall shows the French national flag and reads 'PRAY FOR PARIS.'Starting from noon on that day, Professor Magali Plattet, who comes from France, and students from the Department of French Language and Literature dropped in to express their condolences, and President Dong Yeon Kim and members of the Academic Affairs Committee paid a visit to the place right after the meeting to lay flowers and pay a silent tribute. About ten students from Nepal, which was hit hard by an earthquake in April, also dropped by to mourn the dead.About thirty French students are currently studying at Ajou in addition to Professor Magali Plattet, and no loss has been confirmed so far for them, direct or indirect, because of the terror.Director Man Ghyu Pak of the Center for Korea-Francophone Countries Cooperation said, "Ajou has close relationships with France, because the University was established under the Technology and Culture Agreement between the Republic of Korea and France," adding, "I express heartfelt condolences for those who lost their lives in the terror in Paris and stand by the French people regarding the incident."The memorial space is scheduled to be open until Nov. 18th.< Professor Magali Plattet who comes from France expresses her condolence for the terror victims. >< Students from the Department of French Language and Literature join Professor Magali Plattet in memory of the deceased. >< President Dong Yeon Kim and the Academic Affairs Committee members lay flowers and pay a silent tribute.>< Nepalese students express their sympathy.>

Ajou's Department of Public Administration holds an event to celebrate its 30th anniversary2015-11-17Ajou's Department of Public Administration held an event to celebrate its 30th anniversary in the University Gymnasium on November 14th.The event was attended by about 150 people including President Sang Yeop Lee (admitted class of 1986) of the Department Alumni Association, alumni, students, and professors. The presence of honorary professors Hwa Soo Lee, Kong Yul Kim, and Sook Jong Chung made the occasion even more significant. The ceremony began with a tree planting in celebration of the 30th anniversary, followed by the presentation of scholarships and congratulatory performances.The Ajou Public Administration Scholarships, which was launched in 2012 and has been giving scholarships to the University students once a year on the Department of Public Administration Day, presented scholarships to 31 students from the Department on that day. The congratulatory performances featured plays by the student band and choir, and a saxophone performance by Professor Ho Seob Kim.President Dong Yeon Kim said in his message for the publication of collected works in commemoration of the 30th anniversary, "I ask that the Department of Public Administration will serve as a pioneer in changing our society in positive, different, and significant ways."< A saxophone performance by Professor Ho Seob Kim made the anniversary event even more delightful. >< Honorary professors and professor alumni from the Department of Public Administration conduct a tree planting to commemorate the 30th anniversary. >

< Yeong Seong Kim and Gwan Ho Nam receive awards at the Contest>Ajou's Yeong Seong Kim and Gwan Ho Nam win Grand Prizes at a UCC Contest hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning2015-11-17Ajou University's Yeong Seong Kim (Department of Environmental Engineering, admitted class of 2010) and Gwan Ho Nam (Department of Mechanical Engineering, admitted class of 2011) won Grand Prizes at the "Public Contest regarding the Safety of Living Modified Organisms for Tests and Research and Laboratories" (UCC Division) to mark the 9th Laboratory Safety Day. It was hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning.The Contest attracted applications in Poster and UCC divisions from June 29th to August 14th, and the award ceremony was held on November 9th at the GS Tower in Seoul. Awards of the Minister of Science, ICT, and Future Planning and the prize money were presented to the Grand Prize winners.The award-winning UCC was entitled "Cool Tips for Safe Experiments," and it featured ways for effectively preventing and dealing with accidents that can take place in labs. An interesting idea included in the UCC was to put fluorescent tape on the floor to help people easily evacuate in possible power outages related to fire.Regarding the award, Yeong Seong Kim said, "I have participated in public contests several times because I am quite interested in safety, which is also relevant to my major. Ajou's Science Education Center for Gifted Student holds the graduation ceremony for software education2015-11-17On November 14th, Ajou University's Science Education Center for Gifted Student (SECGS. Director Young Hwa Ha) held a wrap-up presentation and graduation ceremony for a software education program for gifted students in the auditorium of Yulgok Hall. The education program lasted for one year, with the number of graduates being fifty-five.The project was initiated last year by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency to foster software talents, and Ajou's SECGS was selected as the institute representing education centers under domestic universities, and it has provided education for the program since early this year.SECGS's goal is to operate an education program for gifted students that combines experiences, learning, challenges, and a career setting, and it has developed and run three courses to help students learn key capabilities required for software engineers, build firsthand experiences at the industrial sites, and conduct research projects. The three courses are Industry-oriented (a process to resolve technical difficulties for businesses), Product-oriented (a process to develop new products), and Service-oriented (a process to plan services), and 20 students were selected for each of the courses.Director Ha said, "It is essential to discover early and foster creative students who can lead the software-oriented society," adding, "Ajou will continue to develop as a leading university in producing talents who have expertise in software."
