Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim gives a special lecture at an international seminar on air force information communication technology 2015-11-04Ajou University's President Dong Yeon Kim stressed "challenge-taking and innovation" at a special lecture delivered to the '2015 International Seminar on Air Force Information Communication Technology (ICT).'The Seminar was held on November 3rd at the Air Force Club under the theme 'ICT Innovation and Challenges for the Development of Aerospace Capability,' and it began with congratulatory remarks, followed by a key-note speech, a special lecture, presentations, and discussions. It was attended by about 600 ICT experts, including Special Advisor to the President for Security Affairs Jong In Lim and Israeli Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Uri Gutman.In his lecture, President Kim stressed the importance of 'challenge-taking and innovation,' citing historical examples. First, he introduced 'Secret of Superpowers,' a program broadcast by the Educational Broadcasting System. According to the program, superpowers were common in the fact that 'they had tolerance and innovation, embraced diversity, tried new things, and took on challenges.' He also mentioned David And Goliath (author: Malcolm Gladwell), a book that analyzed wars over the past two centuries. The book points out that weaker countries with less than one-tenth of population and soldiers than stronger ones recorded a success rate of as high as 63.6 percent in wars when they adopted new approaches based on challenge-taking and innovation.President Kim went on to emphasize, "The Air Force should contribute to developing convergence technologies in cooperation with the civil sector and the Creative Economy, while improving its aerospace capabilities," adding, "Ajou will continue to cooperate closely with The Air Force as a university supporting the Department of Defense and Digital Convergence based on a contract with the Air Force."

Ajou's second President's Book Club deals with David And Goliath2015-11-04At noon on November 3rd, the second session of Ajou University's President's Book Club was held in the Global Lounge in the University Library with 14 students in attendance.At the Book Club, participants discussed David And Goliath authored by Malcolm Gladwell. The book suggests ways for ordinary people to meet their challenges with a variety of examples, including the battle between David and Goliath.President Dong Yeon Kim explained why he selected the book, "This book explains how the weak beat the strong, and contains a number of messages that can be helpful to Ajou people who can become the weak at any time. He evaluated author Gladwell, "He is excellent in analyzing how people act, and collecting and analyzing examples to deliver his messages, which makes his books interesting."During the event, students and President Kim exchanged their views of the book. There were students who asked for his advice on their individual concerns, and President Kim gave them suggestions in a candid manner.President Kim said to the students, "I hope that this Book Club will help you to enjoy reading and understand the wide spectrum of people's thoughts."

Ajou's Graduate School of International Studies invites 20 foreign alumni to celebrate its 20th anniversary2015-11-03Ajou University's Graduate School of International Studies, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, held an event involving invited foreign alumni. The week-long event began with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. on November 2nd. 20 foreign alumni from 14 countries have been invited, and they will participate in lectures, including the Global HR Forum hosted by the Korea Economic Daily, and tours, etc. through November 7th.Ajou's Graduate School of International Studies was established in March 1996 by Daewoo Group and the University. Daewoo Group expected the School to teach Korean language, technology, and business administration to technicians and business managers from countries like Romania, Poland, and Uzbekistan, and the University pursued globalization. The School currently admits students regardless of their nationalities and has 183 students from 39 countries, including Koreans, as of this semester. There are four departments in the School – the Department of International Business, the Department of International Trade, the Department of International Development and Cooperation, and the Department of NGO Studies. Among the invitees were five graduates who attended the School on the Daewoo Group scholarship, nine who were on the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) scholarship, and one who was on the Global Korea Scholarship provided by the National Institute for International Education. All the alumni appeared happy to visit their alma mater.Rosita D Jegova from Bulgaria (class of 1999, works for VISA International) said, "As a woman, I am actively working at a major position in my company at 57. It is thanks to the MBA degree that I obtained from Ajou's Graduate School of International Studies. I am so excited to be back here after 18 years." Zhu Chunnan from China (class of 2006, Deputy Dean of the School of Business at Northeast Normal University) said, "The experiences of studying in Korea helped me a lot in terms of research." Gyawali Rajeshwor from Nepal (class of 2007, works at Nepal's Prime Minister's Office) stated, "I was able to understand the big picture of the global economy and trade while studying international trade, which helped me to take my current position. So, I want to thank Ajou and KOICA."Dean Jay Ick Lim of the Graduate School of International Studies said in the opening ceremony, "Ajou's Graduate School of International Studies has 615 alumni in 69 countries. The network among them will serve as a very important asset not just for themselves, but for the University."

Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim gives a special lecture to heads of organizations in Gyeonggi-do2015-11-02Starting at 7:20 A.M. on October 30th, Ajou University's President Dong Yeon Kim gave a special lecture entitled 'Pleasant Innovation' at a breakfast meeting held in the Gyeonggi Small and Medium Business Support Center. About 150 members of the Giwoo Society attended the meeting.The Giwoo Society has about 200 members including public organizations, main institutions including Ajou, and corporations based in Gyeonggi-do. It was established to contribute to the development of Gyeonggi-do by sharing public opinions, making policy suggestions, and conducting community services, etc. The program of the Society's meeting, which is held over breakfast on a monthly basis, includes policy briefing from the Gyeonggi-do government, meetings, and special lectures.The lecture by President Kim is unusual because lectures at the Society meetings are delivered by speakers invited from outside. President Kim's lecture was arranged on the recommendation of the team leaders within the Society.In his lecture, President Kim said, "We should ensure social mobility in Korea to effectively address social issues, including polarization, and make our society sustainable. That can be achieved by providing many opportunities to people and lowering entry barriers." He explained the seriousness of polarization by quoting a paper that analyzed wealth distribution in Korea. According to it, the top 10 percent of Korean society has 66 percent of the total wealth, whereas the 50 percent at the bottom has only 2 percent. Twenty-eight students complete Ajou's BEC.AR Program entrusted by the Argentine government2015-10-29The graduation ceremony for the BEC.AR Program was held on October 29th in Ajou University's Yulgok Hall.The Program, which is managed by Argentina’s Prime Minister’s Office, entrusts Argentine talents to overseas universities for training, and the Argentine government provides all the expenses for them. In 2013, Ajou University was appointed by the Argentine government as an educational institution for the Program for the first time in Korea, and it has been running the Program as the only operator in the country.Over the last three months since the entrance ceremony on July 31st, the twenty-eight students have been trained in Information Technology (IT), Bio Technology (BT), Nano Technology (NT), and Energy Technology (ET), as well as South Korea's economic development and the Korean language. The Program completion ceremony was attended by Argentina’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Jorge Roballo and Dean Jay Ick Lim of the Graduate School of International Studies and other related officials who offered the graduates words of encouragement.Dean Lim said, "I hope that what you have learned at Ajou will contribute to the development of the Argentine economy as well as yourselves."Argentina’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Jorge Roballo stated, "I would like to thank all the officials who have operated the program successfully," adding his words of congratulation, "Despite the relatively short period of time, I hope that the education in South Korea's science and technology and history will benefit not only yourselves, but other Argentine people." < A graduate of the BEC.AR Program holds the Certificate of Completion. Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim gives a special lecture at the World-OKTA Next Generation Trade School2015-10-29 On October 27th, Ajou University's President Dong Yeon Kim gave a special lecture under the theme "Pleasant Innovation" to 100 people who participated in the Next Generation Trade School hosted by the World-OKTA (Overseas Korean Traders Associations, Chairman Ki Chool Park) at the Saemaul Undong Central Training Institute in Seongnam City.The Next Generation Trade School is a program that the World-OKTA has been running since 2003 to foster overseas Korean traders. It aims to support young businesspeople as next-generation global economic leaders who will play a central role in the economic network of Koreans in the future.The young participants who joined the 13th Next Generation Trade School this year were selected by 48 branches in 23 countries, and they finished the local courses in their respective countries. They arrived in South Korea on October 24th to receive extensive training for seven days through October 30th on trade practices, preparing and presenting plans on starting and running businesses, and education on the Korean culture.In his lecture, President Kim asked that the participants constantly challenge themselves to find what they really want to do and be responsive to social issues. Regarding the qualities of leaders in our society, he quoted Jim Collins prioritizing character over expertise and asked them to become true leaders with a 'challenge-taking spirit' and 'consideration of others.' The lecture was so popular that the Q&A session lasted for about thirty minutes after the 90-minute lecture.Prior to the lecture, President Kim met with Chairman Park and agreed on expanding bilateral cooperation, including holding the next session of the Next Generation Trade School at Ajou with participation from Ajou's students, and further developing internships and joint research with OKTA. Ajou's Center for Japanese Policy holds an international conference at the University2015-10-28At 1:30 p.m. on October 28th, Ajou's Center for Japanese Policy (Director Seong Bin Pak) held an international conference under the theme "Looking Forward to a New Era of Economic Cooperation between Korea and Japan" at the University's Dasan Building Auditorium. The conference was prepared to commemorate the 50th anniversary of normalizing diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan and celebrate the opening of the Center.The conference was based on the belief that Korea and Japan face common challenges both internally and externally, and it was attended by prominent economic experts from the two countries. The global economic environment involving Korea and Japan is changing dramatically as China turns into an economy centered on domestic demand amid shrinking trade of processed products. Internally, the two economies face low birth rates, aging societies, and sluggish growth.Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim said in his opening speech, "With the opening of the Center for Japanese Policy, Ajou plans to take student exchanges with its twelve sister universities in Japan to a higher level of cooperation with many other Japanese universities, research institutes, and industries. Furthermore, the University will establish itself as a hub of research and cooperation in Northeast and Southeast Asia by integrating the China Policy Institute, the Center for Unification Studies that will be launched, and research and collaboration regarding Southeast Asia."In his congratulatory remarks, Japanese Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Bessho Goro said, "The Summit of Korea, China, and Japan is scheduled to take place soon," adding, "We will do our best to turn the occasion into an opportunity to further develop the relations between Korea and Japan, and make the 50th anniversary of reopening diplomatic relations a starting point to explore a new future together." Counselor Takashi Osada from the Japanese Embassy to the Republic of Korea read the speech on behalf of Ambassador Goro due to another urgent engagement.Presentations on the above theme were given by Professor Yoon Je Cho (Graduate School of International Studies at Sogang University, Former Secretary to the President for Economic Affairs) and President Joon Kyung Kim of the Korea Development Institute from among the Korean participants, and Dean Naoyuki Yoshino of the Asia Development Bank Institute and Takashi Matsumoto (Advisor to the Dai-Ichi Life Research Institute, Former Vice Minister of the Cabinet Office) from among the Japanese participants.In addition to the presenters, Professor Yong Jin Kim (Ajou University), President Chang Su Jin of the Sejong Institute, and Senior Researcher Jae Ha Park from the Korea Institute of Finance presided over the panel discussions. Panelists included Professor Hee Gab Choi (Ajou University), Vice President Sung Chun Jung (Department of International Macroeconomics & Finance, Korea Institute for International Economic Policy), President Won Deok Lee of the Korean Association for Contemporary Japanese Studies, Director Gyu Don Jung (International Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Strategy and Finance), Professor Seong Bin Pak (Head of the Division of International Studies, Ajou University), and Counselor Takashi Osada from the Japanese Embassy to the Republic of Korea.[Summary of Presentations]▲ Professor Yoon Je Cho – Internally, the Korean economy is facing declining vitality and rising welfare demands in terms of medical expenses and pensions, etc. due to the aging population, as well as deepening social conflicts amid deteriorating income distribution. On the external front, it should carry out industrial restructuring as China is fast catching up. Innovative systems, structural reforms, and improved fiscal functions are necessary regarding income redistribution. We should learn from Japan's experiences in order not to follow the long-running depression of the neighboring economy.▲ President Joon Kyung Kim - The funds which South Korea received from Japan as a claim for war damages after the two countries normalized diplomatic relations in 1965 contributed to resolving the difficulties that South Korea was experiencing in raising foreign capital in the early days of promoting its heavy and chemical industries. At the time, South Korea was desperate to raise foreign capital. The resumed diplomatic relations led to a three-way trade system among Korea, Japan, and the U.S.: Korea processed intermediate goods and parts with its labor force after importing them from Japan and then exported them to the U.S. The international network enabled the Park Jung Hee administration to launch its strategy driven by export-based industrialization.▲ Dean Naoyuki Yoshino - Japan's two-decade-long depression resulted from structural causes. These were the aging population and the flawed financing to small- and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) and venture businesses among others. South Korea needs to reform its employment system, provide finances to SMEs and startups, and establish the credit rating system for SMEs. In addition, fiscal discipline should be introduced to prevent fiscal deficits from escalating.▲ Takashi Matsumoto (Former Vice Minister of the Cabinet Office) – The long recession in the Japanese economy was due to the appreciation of the Yen, and Abenomics is the policy to respond to it. The third arrow pursued by the Abe administration focuses on redistributing income from economic growth by expanding support for child-rearing and reinforcing the social security system, etc. It is important that South Korea and Japan share their respective experiences in that the two countries have many challenges in common.

Ajou's Hyeong Cheol Park wins Excellence Award at the Korea White Hat Contest2015-10-28Ajou University's Hyeong Cheol Park (Department of Cyber Security) won the Excellence Award in the Adult Division of the Hacking Defense Competition at the 2015 Korea White Hat Contest, which was co-hosted by the Ministry of Defense and the National Intelligence Service on October 26th at the K Hotel in Yangjae-dong, Seoul.The Contest, which marked its third year this year, is designed to discover and foster young talents in cyber security in a move to protect against cyber security threats. This year, various other events were held, including lectures by invited experts, meetings with hackers, and the cyber quiz contest, in addition to the Hacking Defense Competition.“White hats” refer to those who try to hack into information systems for the purpose of public interest and research, etc. or those who create strategies to deal with hacking. It is a synonym for white hackers. A total of 1,300 people from 464 teams participated in this year's Hacking Defense Competition. The preliminary round was held on October 10th, and 16 teams advanced to the final round that was held on October 21st. Participants were asked to resolve issues in a simulated cyber warfare situation, and the evaluation focused on how individual teams defended the servers assigned to them in an accurate and speedy manner when attacked by the organizers. Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim visits Cambodia to discuss the overseas student business program2015-10-27Ajou University's President Dong Yeon Kim visited Cambodia for three days and four nights from October 21st to the 24th to discuss the operation of overseas business startup programs for students. During the visit, Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) were signed with the Phnom Penh Office of the Korea Trade Investment-Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and universities in Cambodia. An overseas business startup program for Ajou's students is expected to begin within this year based on the MOUs.The overseas business startup program in Cambodia was arranged to help Ajou's students launch businesses abroad and to expand Ajou's cooperation and exchanges with local universities. The program, which will be operated along with KOTRA, will provide mentoring, management, training services, and one-year expenses to the students who are selected to take part. Participants are to develop business models (6 months) and conduct business incubation (6 months) with the support of local institutions and universities.Regarding the program, Ajou concluded MOUs with KOTRA's Phnom Penh Office, Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP, the most prestigious national university in Cambodia), and University of Puthisastra (UP, a prominent private university). Officials from KOTRA's Phnom Penh Office plan to visit Ajou in November to give a briefing on the program, and the University is scheduled to select about ten students who will be sent to Cambodia by year's end.During the visit, President Kim went to KOTRA's Phnom Penh Office to listen to the status of youth business startups, and he talked with students who are participating in the program over a meal. He then dropped by the sites of scenic agriculture and festival tourism, main items of the business startup program for Ajou's students.President Kim's other activities during the recent visit included an MOU signing with the Information Communication Technology Association of Cambodia, a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly, an MOU signing with the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC), and a dinner at the invitation of the Korean ambassador to Cambodia. During his meetings with the UYFC President Hun Many, the third child of Prime Minister Hun Sen, and Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly, President Kim discussed ways of cooperation between Ajou and Cambodia and, in extension, between Korea and Cambodia.Meanwhile, Vice President for External Relations Office Byung Chun So, who accompanied President Kim, visited Thai Nguyen University in Vietnam and signed an agreement on the 2+2 dual degree system involving Ajou and Thai Nguyen.< Captions for pictures >1. Ajou’s LINC Project Group and Suwon City hold the ICT Convergence Idea Contest2015-10-26The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Convergence Idea Contest, which was co-hosted by Ajou University’s LINC Project Group and Suwon City, was held on October 16th and 17th in the Suwon Indoor Gymnasium. The event is part of the 12th Suwon Information & Science Festival and was held under the theme of ICT-based industrial technology and robotics industry.The Contest is the first crowdsourcing-based event to be organized by a primary local government in Korea. It was attended by about 600 participants from 370 teams, who presented a number of creative ideas on products, software, and services by integrating ICT.In addition to the Contest, the Suwon Information & Science Festival featured various other activities, including the Steam Up Robot Contest, the Student Science Fest, the Information Olympiad, and the Capstone Design Fair.The Steam Up Robot Contest included pushing robots off the stage via remote control, the Smart Rescue (have robots perform their missions and then leave the stage by using sensors), robot soccer, and other activities in which participants could learn how robots work and experience firsthand how they can be useful in our daily lives. The Capstone Design Fair, in which university students participated, involved many innovative ideas and great works, indicating that we live in an 'era of idea competition' over day-to-day items.A number of participants from Ajou University won awards at the event.
